DURING WWI A young French soldier was seriously wounded in battle.
One of his arms had been badly smashed and had to be amputated.
The soldier was an otherwise strong and healthy individual, and it grieved the surgeon that the young man would have to go through life maimed.
In a gesture of compassion, the doctor waited by the soldier’s bedside to tell him the news when he gained consciousness.
When the young man awakened, the surgeon told him, “I am sorry to tell you this, but you have lost your arm.”
To which the soldier replied, “Sir, I didn’t lose my arm – I gave it…for France.”
In John 10 Jesus said, “I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down Myself…” (vv. 17b, 18a).
THOUGHT: JESUS DID NOT LOSE HIS LIFE. INSTEAD, HE GAVE IT – FOR YOU AND ME.
